| Geraldine McEwan stars as the new Miss Marple in four ITV1 films
Sometime in April on PBS> I can't wait. I loved Joan Hickson as Miss Marple. I see that she passed on in 1998 at
92. I thought the British films with Dame Margaret Rutherford were silly but enjoyable

Minnie I loved Margaret Rutherford as Jane Marple-I know she was a 'crusty' figure but she reminded me so much of my Grandmother! I will look forward to seeing the new series and hope they do a good job with it. I much prefer Miss Marple to Hercule! Pat |

| (sniped from The crime and mystery website) The new Miss Marple has been adapted for ITV1's 21st century viewers. She reveals a touching past relationship with a married man - and one of the films has a lesbian theme. ITV1 introduced a homosexual theme in the Poirot adaptation of Four Little Pigs. And with the authorisation of Agatha Christie's estate, the producers have even changed the identity of the murderer in one of the mysteries just to confuse those who remember the BBC series or the original book plot. I hope they don't ruin things. I will like Geraldine but changing things ??? |

Maybe I will stick to reading the books! I prefer my Miss Marple sitting in her chair knitting in her little village and analyzing her people and solving the crime. I don't like it when new versions of any of my old favorites decide they need to 'modernize'...sigh Pat |

| Oh, I didn't remember who Geralidine was until they showed a short clip last night. I loved Lucia - but can she be soft and unassuming enough for our Miss Marple? I don't picture her wrapped in a pink fascinator. |

I think the best Miss Marple is Joan Hickson. She seems quiet but you can see her brain ticking away as she knits. I saw the new adaptation with Geraldine and i didnt like to know about her past life. Her being involved with a married man made her too modern.I prefer to think of her as a widow maybe, devoting her life to solving murders for people. |

| Involved with a married man!!!!!!!!!!! Not our Miss Marple. I don't think we are supposed to see her as a widow either. No one would call a widow "miss". I think the point of her character is that she has a rich interior life and lively mind wrapped in a plain brown paper exterior. She is the older single woman that people, in their ignorance, think must be of no consequence. They treat her almost as background, and her very unobtrusive behavior is what allows her to observe all the little details of human behavior without being seen to observe. She enjoys her own company, has lots of friends and isn't to be pitied for her single state. I think I will boycott the new series. Miss Marple an adulteress? I think not! |

| As I said-I hate it when they decide to 'modernize' old favorites....I know I won't like this version if they show MISS Marple as having had an affair-and with a married man-yikes! Pat |

| Watched it and it wasn't too bad. The showing was followed by a preview of our new Sherlock soon to appear on PBS. |

| No one will ever beat Margaret Rutherford as Miss Marple - not to mention her husband, Stringer Davis, who always played her accomplice Mr. Sringer. Joan Hickson was always my least favorite Miss Marple. She always looked as tho she was in a coma. |

| Isn't that funny, I loved Joan Hickson and thought she was perfect. She played a maid in one of the early Rutherford Marples. I loved Margaret too and have a lot of her Miss Marple adventures taped . I look at them differently and try not to compare. As long as they keep the story line pretty accurate it's ok. |

| but they did change the stories. I am watching the new Miss Marple because it still beats whatever else is on, but I always heave as sign of regret that it isn't what it was. |

| At least they seem to be keeping to the period-dress, cars etc. Since there isn't much else on in that time slot-it is definitely better viewing than a lot of what passes for entertainment! Pat |

| I'm watching and enjoying the series but I've been a GM fan for many years - she was wonderful in The Barchester Chronicles. I'm not shocked that she once had an affair. I remember when I was a young teenager that there were many single women who had lost fiances during WWI. It was tough for them. During the 1920's women of marriagable age far outnumbered the men and divorce was rare. The casts are excellent as are settings, costumes etc. The idea that Miss.M. loved and lost makes a lot of sense given her insights into others. |
