| I'm sitting here listening to "The War of the Worlds" Orson Welles radio presentation of 1938. A local station treats us to old time radio and of course this is a prize program.
So many people actually thought we were being invaded by Martians at this time. I think they made a TV Movie at one time depicting this production.

| Yes, Minnie. The movie depicted the mass hysteria. I saw it when I was 17. |

| I love the music to War of the Worlds written by Jeff Wayne.I keep thinking it would be great as a show using shadow puppets for the marsion ships but having a real one come of stage near the end. |

"I love the music to War of the Worlds written by Jeff Wayne" Did that come out as an album? I ssem to remember one. When I can uncover my records I'll see if I have it. Sounds familiar or do you mean the movie music? |

| Minnie, my parents remember that radio broadcast of the Orson Wells drama -- they were children aged 7 and 11 at the time. It's true that many people thought it was a real news program and that our planet was actually being invaded by Martians!!! |

| Ive never seen any films or even heard the 'invasion' section on the radio. All I know is that some beautiful music had been written so it is portrayed as a musical. The Moody Blues sang a song from it called Forever Autumn which is hypnotically atmospheric.I definately recomend it. |

| I wore out a couple of LPs of Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds" and now have it on CD. Richard Burton's narration is superb. Clare, I love "Forever Autumn," which interestingly was not written specifically for "War of the Worlds" but slotted into the rest of the theme as if it were. It was a solo hit for Justin Hayward, but is now included in "Best of the Moody Blues" though technically not a Moody Blues (the group) song. The late Phil Lynott's performance in "Thunder Child" is great, in my opinion. When my kids were little they picked up on the Ulla! Ulla! refrain, and they could imitate the sound effect of the machines firing their death rays (or whatever they were). Actually, I just asked my younger son if he remembers "War of the Worlds" and he says yes; and he spontaneously did the sound effect thing. :-) |

| I heard they are making a War of the Worlds film, with Tom Cruise. Anyone know more about this? |

| I read somewhere, I think Discovery or Psychology Today, that the false newsflash business was done with the knowledge and approval of the US Government. It was a test of public reaction to an invasion. Given the politics of the day, it's quite possible. |

I knew I had an record album of the show and finally found it. It is not the music that was mentioned before but "An authentic first edition. . . never before released! Complete, not a dramatic word cut. Script by Howard Koch from the famous H.G. Wells novel . . .featuring the most famous permormance from The Mercury Theatre On the Air!" I can't find a date on it. It is a two record album put out by Evolution records On the back cover are reprinted some headlines that were in the newspapers regarding the program |

FriedaG,Im loving that Forever Autumn song to,it really goes well with the rest of the music. Burtons narration is classic. Not to sure if Tom Cruise would be good in a film of it.I see it as a more of an independant production with no stars in it, otherwise it would just be another Independence Day. |

| Here's the scoop on the movie: Being directed by Steven Spielberg (!), starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning, based on HG Wells' book, due out in 2005. |

| I am not a Cruise fan, but I just love that Dakota Fanning (I think I have mentioned that once or twice!) I wonder what sort of treatment they will give this film? I enjoy films like Independence Day & Close Encounter of the Third Kind....I guess I will have to wait for the TV previews. Pat |

| Around 1965, a Buffalo radio station re-enacted Orson Welles version. And got the same reaction-some people who heard it thought it was real. Because they used local names and places. example, "The Martians are on Grand Island , headed for Niagara falls." The next day someone at the radio station was fired over the hubbub it caused! |

| I saw the previews of the new movie due out soon...it looks very similar to The Day After Tomorrow or any of those kind of 'total destruction' movies....not sure how good it will really be just from watching the previews but I will probably go see it. Pat |

| I'm in the process of re-reading the book. Will then go see the movie. If they can come close to recreating the flavor of the book, it will be wonderful. However, the story originally takes place in 19th century England. I can't imagine Tom Cruise being able to do a convincing British accent. My fear is that they will mutilate this wonderful story by H.G. Wells. |

| Beth-this takes place in NY....so many changes it just may not be recognisable LOL! Pat |

| I haven't read any reviews so far. I might just wait for the video if the reviews aren't great. New York?! lol. The good Mr. Wells is probably turning in his grave. The book was as much a social commentary as it was a story. |
