| As we know from the immortal FRIENDS quote(Chubby Monica-Shut up, the camera adds 10 pounds.Chandler-How many cameras are actually on you!!?)people can look bigger in films.
Im intrigued to know actresses/actors real size. Ive read Marilyn Monroe was anything from a size 12 to 16. Audrey Hepburn must have been a size 6-8. Kate Winslet slimmed down to a size 8 in Titanic but is normally a 14(UK) Anybody else know of the actual size clothes stars take(UK or USA sizes)? |
Follow-Up Postings:

| Keep in mind that in Marilyn Monroe's day, the size they called a 12, we would call an 8 today. Yes, as women have grown more comfortable with girth, sizes have been adjusted to promote good self-esteem. I've heard that Jennifer Connelly has a 23-inch waist. I think that would put her in a 0. 2 at biggest. |

| I've seen a few leading lady or ingenue actresses in NY and LA and they are all very thin - like size 4 or less. To give you an idea, I was on the set of All My Children (my claim to fame, under-5 lines on one episode), and I am 5'3" and was a size 6 -- I felt like a cow next to all the women on that show. Most leading men-types I've seen or met are on the slight side but pretty well built and normal looking - not incredibly thin. People who are "big" (i.e, size 8 or 10) who look good on film or video I would imagine have really good figures and are well-toned. I think the style in the 40's - 60's was more well-built (rather than super thin), and I know from looking for costumes in vintage stores, trying to find something for the leading lady in "10 Little Indians" who was a size 12, that NONE of the size 12 clothes from that timeframe would ever fit her. For one thing, apparently women had smaller waists in general. I remember the hoopla about Kate Winslet being "fat" in "Titanic" -- what's the world coming to!!!? She was certainly gorgeous in that movie. One problem may have been that her leading man was so thin (Leo certainly seemed thin as a rail in those days, didn't he? I've always had a crush on him, dirty old lady that I am, but he finally filled out in "Gangs of New York" and looked three times as good!) Rose |

| I saw Julia Roberts before her pregnancy and she was very, very thin. I would guess that she is normally about a vanity size 4 (in cheaper clothes they call it a 6). That's US sizes. Clare, what's the difference in womens' clothing sizes between the US and the UK? |
|
| From what I understand the USA sizes are one less than ours, ie USA size 10 is UK size 12. I think the statistics over here are that the majority of woman are a size 16(US size 14) and over.Yet the magazines/a feeling in the air constantly pound us that we have to be a uk size 12 or under. Alot of it is aimed at teenagers who think its uncool/unattractive to be bigger. No offence meant, but over here there is alot of talk about how obesity in adults is on the rise in parts of America and when I see the pictures it makes adults in this country look tiny. But in contrast we have had reports on obesity in children over here because kids dont go outside and play anymore and stay in and play computer games. Im a UK size 14/16(Im a classic pear shape, dam those hips!)I see myself as a Kate Winslet size afer the gained weight after Titanic(in her green dress at the Oscars) which I consider to be a normal size. Julia Roberts was on the news this morning beacuse of her babies and the old footage showed her looking very thin.I could see her rib cage(black dress with the underarm sections cut out, think it was at the Oscars). Just thought of a couple of perfect examples. |

| Clare: "Rene Zellweger in Bridget Jones is apparently fat but looks normal to me, also Martine McCutchens character(Hugh Grants love interests in Love Actually) was supposed to be fat but again looked completely healthy and normal." Amen! In fact, I was kind taken aback at the several "fat" comments about Martine McCutchen in that film. It's really kind of ridiculous. According to the dialogue I would have thought somebody like Delta Burke (when she was younger), or Donna ___ (the girl in "Saturday Night Fever" who was in unrequited love with Tony) -- somebody very cute but a little chubby. As for Renee Z - not only was she not fat -- she had a really nice figure! Rose |
|
| Woooooohoooooooo. If only more people thought like us ay!! I was completely shocked when I realised Martines character was meant to be chubby!! Then again Im not quick on the uptake.I didnt realise that there was a gay couple in 4 wedding and a funeral until the end. |

| Amen ladies! I cannot get over the hype that Bridget Jones is supposed to be fat! Um, she looks totally normal - healthy even! The whole sham of it all is that it is Hollywood's version of fat! Appalling! I think that Jennifer Anniston was so much cuter, healthier, prettier - when she had more plump to her. If you watch the old Friends episodes, she had a rounder face, plumper cheeks. Now she is ugly and looks totally unhealthy. She has a protruding chin, a bulbous nose and gaunt cheekbones - not to mention she is a bag of bones. How can anyone find that attractive? Another example is Cameron Diaz - take a good look at her in The Mask. It is hard to believe it is the same girl that we see today. I just saw The Good Body by Eve Ensler on Broadway. The amazing woman is trying to change what society and Hollywood deem as the "perfect body" - I love her, she's my hero! if it even gets around to you, try to catch it.

| "Woooooohoooooooo" is right, Clare. The bad part is that US sizes changed for women back in the mid 80s. I noticed suddenly I was purchasing size eights when I always wore size 10/12 - much your same scale. I couldn't figure it out when I knew I hadn't lost any weight. I frequented Hudsons here in Michigan (now Marshall Fields) and a couple buyers for the store confirmed it for me. The logic, they explained, is reverse competition with the rise of the "full figure" recognition. More and more larger-sized women's stores were popping up. So, the industry didn't want a woman who wore size 14 feeling self conscious. Also, wearing size 18 is easier to swallow than a size 20. |
|
| Its strange to think that 'figures can be in fashion'. If you look at old masters paintings women were very full figured which were seen as appealing. I watched a programme about BBW(Big Beautiful Women) the other day. They were very right in saying that there is a huge market out there for plus size clothing. There is only 1 high street shop that I know of that is aimed at larger sizes. Also Dawn French(Jennifer 'Ab Fab' Saunders comedy partner,Vicar in Vicar of Dibley)has had her own clothing range for a few years now.She is a big lady and the clothes are beautiful but I heard the company didnt really take off!. |

| Just got to this post after looking for info on the equivalent in pounds to American/UK/Continental sizes. Quite difficult task, indeed. To my dismay, with all I've read, I've come to the conclusion we have the same problem (and the same reasons for that problem) here in South America. And that happens not only on TV but on regular pictures as well. Now, my question is: if all this trouble has (probably) begun with how we look on TV, wasn't it about time cameras had been updated/developed to show us the size we are?!?! Where is technology research money being spent if not on making better products? On a more proactive (and maybe profitable!)(-_^) approach, I might any day take Sony, Kodak, Pentax, etc. to court, for selling me a product with no previous warning to that 'defect', or, have you ever read about that in any camera manual/guide?! |

| I seriously wonder if its a technical fact that a picture makes you look bigger or because of the artificial reality we're presented with photography (Yes, even home pictures of yourself are a type of artificial reality) affects our psychological perceptions. I know for a fact that most people, when they see someone in person who's good looking, they think "Wow, that person is good looking" (Or something to that effect), but if that same person was photographed and printed, people would have a much more critical opinion of them. The fact is that when we see other people (Movie stars, etc) in a film or magazines, we are preconditioned to expect certain things which skew our perspectives into being more critical. That person is not real and so they should be perfect. However, when we see that same star in person, our perspective is based on the current recognition within our visual system that's based on a real three dimensional object that can be accurately imaged by our brain. A similar thing happens when we see photos of ourselves. When we look in the mirror, we're getting a true, three dimensional representation of ourselves. We see ourselves as we really are. However, our brain automatically compensates for certain things in an effort to preserve our innate self image. When we see a photograph, though, we're seeing a two dimensional representation that our unconcious brain does not recognize and so we look at ourselves not only more honestly, but more critically. Long story short, I believe that its a purely psychological effect and that the technology isn't responsible for it. |

| I thought Kate Winslet was beautiful in Titanic also. She was noticeably slimmed down since then though - did you see her on the Golden Globes show? She is still very beautiful though (in my opinion). I also like Minnie Driver - another woman who doesn't look disgustingly thin. I pity all those starving people out there. I love to eat too much! |

| Ha! Just read this - Tobey Maguire dropped out of his appearance at the Golden Globe Awards minutes before the show - after he was advised to keep his weight problems private. The Spider-man star was scheduled to introduce a clip of Martin Scorsese movie The Aviator, which went on to scoop the Best Drama prize at Sunday's ceremony. But he pulled out at the last minute - reportedly at the insistence of close aides who want to keep him out of the spotlight until he loses the pounds he's recently piled on. The Los Angeles awards' producers managed to recruit Orlando Bloom to replace Maguire, reports Pagesix.Com. |

| I thought Minnie Driver was adorable in that movie with Alan Cumming and Chris O'Donnell, but she was playing the role of a fat girl. In Hollywood, fat means anything over 110 ponds, I guess. |
