| "Good Night, and Good Luck", a black and white movie-documentary of Edward R. Murrow. Exceptionally good because of its simplicity and subject matter. I have a feeling this movie is one of those that will not be in the theater very long.

| Bill I saw a preview of that one and saw Clooney interviewed about it. I have heard varied reviews regarding the 'truth' of the film about Murrow....I will probably pass on it. My Netflix movies will ship tomorrow-De-Lovely & The Interpreter. Pat |
RE: November Movies - What Are You Watching?
| | |
| Hi Pat, it is "The Interpreter" here tonight. First Netflix said 'long wait' and then 'short wait', and today it was in the mail. Let me know what you think. |
RE: November Movies - What Are You Watching?
| | |
| Waiting for your reviews on The Interpreter. |

| Ghandi - boy, can't think of anyone else better 'born to play the role' than Ben Kingsley. Timeless movie. |

One totally forgettable movie, so don't waste your money renting this one: It's All About Love, with Joachim Phoenix and Claire Danes(with Sean Penn in a cameo that goes nowhere) Two (3 actually) very good actors, but what a dud of a movie. You've got a choppy scenario with glooming cosmic catastrophy, cloning and... figure skating, and that's only a few of the movie's tangents. What were they thinking??? On a lighter note...lol... Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was a delight! |

| Even though I was never a big fan of Johnny Cash, I am looking forward to seeing the new bio film about him. It really looks good. |
RE: November Movies - What Are You Watching?
| | |
| Me too, RD. By thew way, welcome back. I'm not a big Cash fan either, but I love Joaquin Phoenix. Can't wait! I hear it's better than Ray...in both story and acting. I think Phoenix sings the stuff himself too! I saw "Serenity" (not bad if you like the genre), and watched a little film called "Judy Berlin" with an outstanding performance by Madeline Kahn. |

I watched The Interpreter and was disappointed, it was rather ho-hum and not very exciting for "a thriller". Nicole Kidman's last few movies haven't done very well. Pat |

Star Wars 53: Revenge of the whatever. Obviously, I am not a Star Wars fan, as y'all can tell. That being said... as a die-hard X-Files, Star Trek and Serenity follower, I totally understand it if you do. Watched this installment last night. I think I have finally nailed down just what it is that bugs me to no end about the Star Wars series: THE MUSIC! Aaarrrggghhh!! No, seriously, I mean it plays throughout the ENTIRE movie, nonstop. It's just too much for my sensitive ears... make it stop... make it stop... |
RE: November Movies - What Are You Watching?
| | |
| Clairabelle-I love the Star Wars music LOL! I bought the recording after the first Star Wars movie - of all John Williams compositions. It is enjoyable driving around in the car, listening to and naming Jaws, Superman, The Darth Vader theme etc. I bought the DVD Revenge of...but haven't re-watched it yet-saw it at the movies when it came out! Saw two movies with Matt Dillon this weekend interestingly enough. Herbie Fully Loaded last night -- preteen crap fodder. Not enough use of Breckin Meyer who was the most interesting person in the film. And Crash tonight -- finest movie I've seen in awhile. Coherent thread throughout and interesting up and down pacing though mostly quiet like "Traffic." Don Cheadle superb as always, and other standouts include Terrence Howard (what a fox by the way, which has nothing to do with his tremendously moving performance), Ryan Philippe, Matt Dillon! believe it or not! and Sandra Bullock against type. And -- I get to see "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" next Thursday, a day before it opens - Totally Psyched! Rose |
RE: November Movies - What Are You Watching?

| Watched Hide and Seek last night. Love Robert DiNero. Dakota Fanning, as usual did a lot of silence and screaming. She's very good at that. I really didn't figure it out until almost the end. |
RE: November Movies - What Are You Watching?
| | |
| I went out to see "Proof." Rather off-beat plot, in an academic setting dealing with higher mathematics and the issue of trust. Stunning performances by both Anthony Hopkins and Gwynneth Paltrow. |

| I had to take my challenged daughter to the movies last night so my other daughter could have a good time at home with her friends, and we were both happy with Dreamer. Dakota Fanning, Kurt Russell, Elizabeth Shue, in yet another 'come from behind' , 'loser comes through for everyone', common story, but it was heartrending just the same. Excellent movie for the family. Dakota's growing up, and her 'big teeth' are coming in.. so cute ;-D |

I watched De-Lovely last night-a new and different treatment of the life of Cole Porter. It was completely different from the Cary Grant version and the format took some getting used to-for me. But I did enjoy it and thought Kevin Kline-as usual-was good. I enjoyed the music too and since I am not familiar with a lot of the newer singers I had to watch the credits to see who was who - except Natalie Cole I did recognise her! I pm today - Harry Potter - we have tickets already....! Pat |

| Sahara --- what fun I had watching it. |

Watched 'HP & the Prisoner of Azkaban' last night (yes, I'm a bit behind...) - it left me cold, even though the book was the best in the series IMO. Have 'Monsoon Wedding' lined up next, and hoping to get out to see the 'The Brothers Grimm' and 'The Corpse Bride' before they finish! Gilliam and Burton are two of my top favourite directors, so it's a bit annoying to have these two movies coming out at the same time. |
RE: November Movies - What Are You Watching?
| | |
| I watched Crash last night, a very interesting concept of tying the various people together and our preconceptions about various races and nationalities - I enjoyed it. Pat |

| "Magdalene Sisters" (2002) Very sad but true. If anyone wants to be hit over the head with a ball bat, this is the movie. How can the Irish call themselves human, and treat women this way? Unbelievable! |
RE: November Movies - What Are You Watching?
| | |
| Bill I have been to Ireland twice and it is a beautiful country and not at all like it was back then. Everything revolved around the Catholic church in those days and the nuns and priests were so severe and harsh - did you read Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt....a perfect example of how people were treated by the church back then. Pat |
RE: November Movies - What Are You Watching?
| | |
| Hi Pat, I did read and watch "Angela's Ashes", and I agree with you in saying most of that era is gone. The above is my reaction immediately following the movie. I had no idea women were considered so less than human in a 'civilized' country. The Magdalena Laundries were finely closed in 1996 according to the movie. This is a hard movie to watch, but educational at the same time. Viewer be warned. We hope to visit Ireland in a year or two. Friends go every other fall, and find the prices great and no congestion. They stay in pubs. |
RE: November Movies - What Are You Watching?
| | |
| I had no idea about the Irish laundries either until I saw The Magdalene Sisters. Highly recommend it!!! |

| "Breaker Morant", (1980). Here is a movie with a bit of everything; war (Boar War), courtroom tatics, and a message of war and its damage to the soldiers asked to follow out any and all orders given. First rate acting. The film won 10 Australian Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. |
RE: November Movies - What Are You Watching?

| I went out to see "Pride & Prejudice". I was not disappointed. Donald Sutherland was wonderful as the father of 5 unmarried girls and played his role with usual panache. The scenery and grand estates and dance scenes were wonderful, too. I just rented "Fargo" which I had never watched in its entirety. Directed by the Coen brothers, a thriller set in Minnesota, with a pregnant detective. Marvelous film -- no wonder it won so many awards! Next, I will watch "Osama", about a young woman in Afghanistan hiding from the Taliban.... |

Last night it was Love Actually - on the recommendations of a friend. Hugh Grant played Hugh Grant-isn't he supposed to retire?! There were a couple of good scenes and as usual Emma Thompson & Alan Rickman were great-but overall too much swearing & nudity/sex for what was supposed to be a Christmas story about love - just my opinion! (what was the deal with the two porn actors....! Oh - it is just a job and they are just like any other 'normal' people....) Pat |
RE: November Movies - What Are You Watching?

Saw a double feature, which I haven't done in eons! Rent, I liked it...leaves you feeling upbeat even with the depressing subject matter. I haven't seen the Broadway play, so I can't compare, critics called it not as good. Can't get that song out of my head .."Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes..." then off - across the hall - to see Harry Potter. It was good, a condensed version of the brick-thick book. Emma Watson does show some acting promise. |

| Just rented "The Return", a Russian film from 2003 that won the Lion d'Or award in Venice. Wonderful direction and scenery: a psychological thriller, set in Northern Russia, about 2 young brothers on a strange journey with a father they scarcely know. The suspense is well worth enduring the subtitles. Highly recommended! |

| Saw Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire twice over the holiday, and while I didn't pick up anything new, I enjoyed it the second time also. I was disappointed at how much of the story had to be left out, of course. But I was mightily impressed with the way they made a coherent screenplay out of a book with such deficient plotting. (Remember this was the one where Valdemort talks the last third of the novel to fill in the plot.) Saw Walk the Line and enjoyed it. Very well done. Phoenix gave a terrific performance and sounded almost like Cash. Witherspoon was delightful and her voice was sweet and pleasant, which was nice for the movie. June Carter's voice, of course, was anything but sweet and pleasant. Still and all, this was a bit too hagiographic for my tastes. Pat, I got the feeling that the bit in Love Actually with the two porn actors was to say that sex has little to do with love. That all the sex in the world doesn't diminish the need for emotional connection. Sort of a warning - "Kids don't try this at home." As to The Magdalene Sisters I found it to be a powerful movie. I liked the way that the only passion in the movie was the priest playing that musical instrument at the beginning (I forget what it was.) and the raped girl screaming in anguish during that service. It caught the balance of power well, I thought. I didn't see it as much a denunciation of the Irish as of the Catholic Church. |

| I rented The Station Agent, which I've wanted to see for a while. A small, quirky little film with no car chases, violence, sex or outrageous special effects. Just goes to show you can make a darn good film without those things. I actually preferred the alternate ending included in the DVD extras. I wanted to go see Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang but can't find any theaters near me that are showing it. Guess I'll have to wait for the DVD release. |

I watched Mr & Mrs Smith - (my DD bought it) I must have been very tired because I didn't get it! I suppose I will have to watch the beginning again when they are talking to -... ? to try to hear what I (might) have missed! Obviously they didn't get killed! It did get a bit over the top with all the shooting LOL! Pat |
RE: November Movies - What Are You Watching?
| | |
| I agree, Pat. I kept waiting for the story to actually begin... but to no avail. Enjoyed the humor, tho. |

| We saw Kiss Kiss Bang Bang last week and it was a hoot -- needed something light and funny and it fit the bill perfectly. Some very funny lines (some of it dark) and clever ideas. It isn't getting much press and the reviews seem somewhat mixed but I'd recommend it, unless you have a total aversion to dark humor. Val Kilmer was wonderful as detective Gay Parry (just one of jokes that some people didn't seem to get) :) Also watched Cinema Paradiso this past weekend -- very good although we both thought the last 1/2 hour dragged (we watched the 2 hour version). Great acting, nice story, told well. I wonder if the longer version took care of the drag at the end of the shorter version, but didn't take the time to watch to find out. We just heard about Crash and have added it to our list. Sounds intense. Happy watching! |

Watched "Shultze Gets The Blues" from our "on demand" feature from our cable provider. What a great little film. Basically about "Schutlze" who retires from the mines in Germany, lives a solitary life, with his accordian, playing polkas. Hears a cajun tune on the radio that has a life changing effect. In german and english. If you like little "off beat" movies and don't mind the subtitles, you'll love it! |

| Dorie, loved The Station Agent. Feels like you're watching real people. Didn't know there was an alternate ending. |

| Went to see The Chronicles of Narnia yesterday and really enjoyed it-very well done. I would think it would be scary for the younger children with some very ugly "monsters" and the battle scenes. Pat |
RE: November Movies - What Are You Watching?

| I watched Ladies In Lavender last night - wonderful performances by Judi Dench & Maggie Smith. It was one of those slow "quiet" movies and I loved it! If you like faster paced/action type movies this one is not for you... Pat |

| Watched "Millions" last night, what a nice charming film. A 5 year old boy has a huge stash of cash literally thrown on to him. His older brother becomes involved, and ethics are battled as to what to do with it, and it's a few days before the cash will become obsolete, due to the change from pounds to euros. Funny, witty, and an inspiring ending. |

| HanArt, the alternate ending scene showed Joe's father, which is why I liked it. It also was just a bit more upbeat than the original ending. Loved the movie, and was shocked when I realized it was rated 'R'! Huh? To me it was one of the mildest movies I've ever seen. |
RE: November Movies - What Are You Watching?

| paula, I just watch "Millions" a week or so ago and enjoyed it too. I thought "the saint" visits were very well done and unique. I wasn't expecting them at all and think they added to the charm. |
