Wildfire Question

Please help settle an argument about Wildfire, the 1975 hit by Michael Martin Murphy. If you're familiar with the lyrics, there's a girl, a horse, and an owl.

My question is, "Did the horse bust out of the stall before the girl died one winter when there came a chilling frost?"

Or "Did the horse bust out of the stall after the girl died?"

Don't feel as if you have to study the lyrics before giving an answer. Just let me know your gut feeling about the image in your mind when you listen to the song.

Simply put, do you imagine a girl chasing a horse? Or do you imagine a ghost chasing a horse?

Thank you for your response.

RE: Wildfire Question

In my mind her horse busted out of it's stall and the girl searched for it, calling its name and dying in the cold. Now her ghost returns from time to time, riding the ghost of the horse.

Damn, I was off the grid in '75 and only know the 4 word chorus. Now I'm intrigued and have to go study the verses/story.

Petaloid's answer seems reasonable to me, although I hadn't viewed it from that perspective until now. I always thought it was strictly a ghost-girl who chased after Wildfire, but, it is quite likely that a live girl and her ghost are calling out for live Wildfire (and the ghost of Wildfire) from past through present.

RE: Wildfire Question

I agree with Petaloid (actually, almost always lol). By looking at certain key words, verb tenses, it confirms that indeed, during the storm (horses are often spooked by high winds, they say) the horse busted out and the girl, frantic, went out into the storm to try and find him but the two were lost, and now the author believes he feels that her/their spirit lives on.
