I sort of miss the days of AM music radio. Just once in a
great while I'd like to hear:
Poetry Man - Phoebe Snow
Society's Child - Janis Ian
Dead Skunk - Louden Wainwright III
Come And Get Your Love - Redbone
Matthew and Son - Cat Stevens |
Follow-Up Postings:

| I heard "Come and Get Your Love" on the Muzak at my local grocery store a few weeks ago - maybe you need to go grocery shopping more often! I can't even REMEMBER the last time I heard Society's Child. |

I'm glad to see a couple of good words for Chicago. There was some really good music on their first two records, and it's still fun to watch the horn section of Loughnane, Pankow and Parazaider when the band appears on tv. They really get into it. Here's one more from '60's AM radio I'd love to hear, anyone remember "Buy For Me The Rain" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (long before all the "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" stuff). A very good song from 1967 I believe. |

Thanks so much jobird, I can't imagine how long it's been since I heard that. That's really a sixtie's song. Back then I was also listening to Buffalo Springfield, the Spencer Davis Group and Jimi's "The Wind Cries Mary". It was really a good time for music. Thanks again. |

Speaking of Canada, does anyone remember a '60's band called The Paupers? I have what I consider to be a really good lp by them called "Magic People". The drummer, Skip Prokop, went on to form Lighthouse ("One Fine Morning" & "Sunny Days") another pretty good horn band. Too many good bands semm to be here today and gone tomorrow while some really wretched one hold on for years. It just ain't fair. |

Jobird, once again I express my gratitude. That was a very interesting article. I had no idea of the amount of history The Paupers had. I knew of the second recording, Ellis Island, but never saw it. When I first picked up Magic People in 1967 I'd never heard a note of their music. I must have read mention of them, probably in "Hit Parader" magazine. To me it's a classic gem, I still listen to it semi-regularly. If you ever see it pick it up. Thanks again. |
RE: 'Songs I'd like to hear once in a while'
| | |
| Hey Jobird, thanks a lot for the links! Appreciate it. Now I can sit at my computer and listen to them. Especially thanks for the "La La" song. I really love that song. |
RE: 'Songs I'd like to hear once in a while'
| | |
| Great article on mashmakhan jobird.i dont remember the paupers quick85,but i sure remember lighthouse. One fine morning is a great song.I really like that really mellow ballad that was relased in the early 70s by tin tin called toast and marmalade for tea.Does anyone remember that one? |
RE: 'Songs I'd like to hear once in a while'
| | |
It seems vaguely familiar. I think it might even be on a Rhino compilation, I just can't remember which. How about: Autobahn - Kraftwerk Sausalito Summer Nights - Diesel Wildflower - Skylark Rock & Roll Lullabye - B.J. Thomas If You Wanna Get To Heaven - Ozark Mountain Daredevils I wish someone from Time-Life would read this post and get to work on a new package: "Songs You'll Never Get Without Dropping Major Bread" Keep 'em coming, folks. |

quick, honey, we've GOT to do lunch! How could have forgotten Skylark's Wildflower, a very significant blast from my personal past. I'll my thanks to jobird for the links. Très apprécié! There's a couple of movie lead songs I'd like to hear again. I'll try and find the exact titles (recall Shirley Bassey and another, young Brit one-hit-wonder...) |
RE: 'Songs I'd like to hear once in a while'

Claiabelle, I listened to "Wildflower" the other afternoon while cruisin' and knew someone else out there had to dig that song. By the way, there's this nice little Italian restaurant on the near-north side of Chicago... Shirley Bassey singing "Goldfinger", I can't imagine anyone doing as good a job. I don't know what else she's done, though. |

Manny, I am now the official owner of "Toast And Marmalade For Tea". A co-worker had it on the aforementioned Rhino compilation "Have A Nice Day Vol. 16". You drove me nuts with that song. I tried to come up with it in my head and kept reverting to "Tea And Honey" by Judy Collins, another fine song. |
RE: 'Songs I'd like to hear once in a while'
| | |

Hey Suntide, Thanks for letting me know about the theme song to Big Love. No,I don't watch it,but I'll start watching it just to catch the song. I also get HBO on Demand, so I can listen to it at anytime. Thanks again! |
RE: 'Songs I'd like to hear once in a while'

I don't know if "Neanderthal Man" is a classic, but it sure is a '70's song. Baby, How'd We Ever Get This Way - Andy Kim Emma - Hot Chocolate Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance) - Leo Sayer Charity Ball - Fanny |

RE: 'Songs I'd like to hear once in a while'
| | |
| Great songs quick85,especially evil woman by crow which i have here somewhere.Getting to your question joird, well, all the above songs i mentioned i have in the form of a 45 or a compilation lp or cd.I have a huge collection of 45s,cds,lps,and cassettes.I could probably program afew radio statons.Im no musician..but i seldom forget a melody of a song i like even if the artist or song title sometimes escapes me.People here like ramblingjack,quick85,rd,and ric all seem to have huge personal collections too.Ric told me to buy the bare trees cd by fleetwood mac,and i love it..a very knowledagable bunch here, to say the least! |
RE: 'Songs I'd like to hear once in a while'
| | |
| Hold me tight and stir it up are two great johnny nash singles we dont hear enough of.The seeker by the who is one id like to hear more of,sure as im sittin here by three dog night, and how do you do by mouth and mcneal are three more great songs we never hear enough.Id love to change the world by ten years after, and freedom rider by traffic are two more. How about fresh air by the quicksilver messenger service or canned heats great single..going up the country.Buffalo springfields with neil young had a great single called mr. soul that i always enjoy.Blind faith and steve winwood always sound great on cant find my way home. How about the three degrees great single..when will i see you again? The late bobby bloom did a great job on his huge hit montego bay.Jonathan edwards and his hit single sunshine, is not heard enough either.I love hearing aretha franklins version of spanish harlem, which is seldom heard anymore. |
RE: 'Songs I'd like to hear once in a while'
| | |
Holy cow, Manny, come up for air. Lot of good songs, though. I almost mentioned Mouth & McNeal but thought I might get laughed off the site. Buffalo Springfield put out two great and one pretty good recording(s). It amazes me that a wider selection of their music dosen't get played. A Younger Girl - The Critters Mr. Dieingly Sad - The Critters I Confess - The New Colony Six The Rapper - The Jaggerz What About Me - Quicksilver Messenger Service Two Hangmen - Mason Proffitt My Belle Ami - The Tee Set 7 o'clock news/Silent Night - Simon & Garfunkel Also, for a different take on early Fleetwood Mac, check out "Rattlesnake Guitar: The Music Of Peter Green", a two disc set featuring Rory Gallagher, Rod Price, Dave Peverett, Kim Simmonds, Southside Johnny and others. I generally stay away from "tribute" albums, but this is pretty good, especially if you find it used. |
RE: 'Songs I'd like to hear once in a while'
| | |
| My belle amie is a great song that i was gonna mention.New colony six had acouple good singles,i have one called things id like to say..or something like that. Those two by the critters are excellent quick85.I need to get more of fleetwood mac with peter green,i have a live cd with green that has a great version of oh well on it.Speaking of great singles we never hear back when my hair as short,by gunhill road anymore. |
RE: 'Songs I'd like to hear once in a while'

We've deviated a bit from the am radio theme but that's ok because a lot of very cool songs have been listed. Now I'm gonna get us back on track with some true 1960's am radio hits, and I don't think I have any of these. Blue's Theme - Dave Allen & The Arrows The Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde - Georgie Fame Let It All Hang Out - The Hombres You Better Sit Down Kids - Cher Little Ole Man - Bill Cosby Green Tambourine - The Lemon Pipers We Can Fly - The Cowsills Tighten Up - Archie Bell & The Drells Master Jack - Four Jacks & A Jill Funky Street - Arthur Conley Cowboys To Girls - The Intruders Sit With The Guru - Strawberry Alarm Clock |
RE: 'Songs I'd like to hear once in a while'
| | |
| Great list,i have green tambourine, master jack, the ballad of bonnie and clyde, tighten up,and let it all hang out.Im not sure about the rest,i may have acouple of those songs on compilations. How about the isrialites by desmond dekker and the aces and pretty ballerina by the left banke,or sally g by paul mccartney. |

| Dancing in the moonlight by king harvest, look what they done to my song by both the seekers and melanie is a great one,and so is everybodys talkin at me by nilson that gets sporadic airplay.Indiana wants me by r.dean taylor is occasioally played, but not enough it seems.Marty balin used to get am airplay with a nice ballad called hearts, that i have not heard in awile.I think hearts was the song title,i have the lp somewhere.I think the lp was self titled. |

What was the deal with Dave Loggins? There was a one hit wonder who shouldn't have been. "Please Come To Boston" was a great song. I love to sing along to that one in the car. Marty Balin was another one that got the fuzzy end of the lollipop. Great voice and he was so good with the Airplane. J.D. Souther did a good job with "You're Only Lonely" about the same time Balin did his solo thing. One other song I NEVER hear is Roger Daltrey's "After The Fire". What's wrong with radio program directors? |

| College radio can be a place to hear some good old, half-forgotten tunes. An occasional poster here is a DJ on a college radio station -- Sam/Karen plays a wide variety of '70s music, some of which I had forgotten, that fits the category of "songs I'd like to hear once in awhile." Commercial stations, whatever the genre/era, seem to play the same 20 songs over and over. Boring! |

Living where I do I'd think I would run across a good number of college stations, but I don't. I don't doubt that there are many out there, but they must have a very meager range. And the ones I do tune in play some really awful (to me) metal or amateurish punk. I dig metal big time: Wasp, Megadeath, Manowar, Priest, Stryper, Anthrax, etc. along with a lot of the hair bands, but stuff from Rob Zombie, Pantera and the like have got me pushing buttons real quick. The best station, and also the one with the best signal, plays (true not smooth) jazz daily from six to six, the rest of the time is filled with folk, bluegrass, southern gospel, blues, roots, and 5 hours of eighties hair bands with no chance of hearing '70's pop. I'd like to see just one playlist from Sam/Karen's show to see what's featured. |
RE: 'Songs I'd like to hear once in a while'
| | |
| Dannys song is a good one jobird, they had a real good short song that got airplay that i have in my collection, but its title escapes me right now,i think its called thinking of you.Two songs i seldom hear and really love are my pledge of love by the joe jeffries band and western union by the 5 americans.Hello hello by the sopwith camel is a great song too. |

God Loves Rock & Roll - Teagarden & VanWinkle Basketball Jones - Tyrone Shoelaces By the way, is anyone familiar with "The Unhappy Ending" by Rick Springfield from around 1972? It's a pretty cool song I only heard once back then and fortunately I had a tape recorder running at the time, so I have it somewhere on reel-to-reel. |

Manny, "Somke..." is a really good song that we get to hear semi-regularly. Another one I liked was "Love Will Find A Way" by Pablo Cruise. I don't know if I ever heard anything else by them even though they had a few records. I always liked Seals & Crofts. They were all over television in the early '70's, as was Kenny Rankin, who did (a fine version of) The Beatles "Blackbird" on any tv show that featured a musical entertainer. Kinda like Kenny Rogers, who did "Desperado" all the time because he was a pal of Don Henley. People like to take shots at Rick Springfield, but I think he's pretty good at what he does. I just got e-mailed from someone at a Springfield site saying "The Unhappy Ending (Lead Me On)" was on a very early album called "Beginnings" that never made it to cd. Maybe jobird will find a link to it. |

Richie Furay left Buffalo Springfield and formed Poco. Also in Poco was Jim Messina (Buffalo Springfield), Timothy B. Schmidt and Randy Meisner (The Eagles). Furay was also a part of "The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band": J.D. Souther (Eagles) - Chris Hillman - (Byrds & Flying Burrito Bros). "The Flying Burrito Bros." was also home to Gram Parsons and Michael Clarke, both of the Byrds. Then my head starts to spin & when I catch my senses we have "Crosby, Stills & Nash", again with BS & Byrd members. Of course, there's probably more to the story. I wonder if Kevin Bacon figures in anywhere. Jim Seals (Seals & Crofts) was supposed to have been a member of The Champs ("Tequila") as was Glen Campbell, who played with The Beach Boys. A guitar player with Seals & Crofts named Louie Shelton, also played with The Carpenters and Boz Scaggs, who in turn was in the Steve Miller Band. (Hey, this is fun but I think I've hit a dead end). No actually, this goes on and on, but you've got to stop somewhere. Manny now, I remember it. I guess I still don't like it. Now Booker T. is a different story. My favorite is "Time is Tight" and he did a very nice version of "Silver Bells". When it comes to instrumentals my thing is surf and hot rod music. Love surf guitar and the Ventures. Three instrumentals I really dig and NEVER hear are: Wild Weekend - The Rockin' Rebels Tall Cool One - The Wailers Hot Pastrami - The Dartells And at least 500 more. In the early '60's a.m. radio was lousy with instrumentals. Ahh, the Lovin' Spoonful: Darlin' Companion Full Measure Lovin' You You're A Big Boy Now Coconut Grove |

| Can't rememer the band(Zombies, perhaps?) but this one's sung every year by us cousins at our family beach reunion and goes something like this (the chorus is 4-part harmony and perhaps the words are mixed up, blame it on my age lol!) It's the time of the season When the lovin's high It's the time, tell it to me easy And I'll tell you what it means to live (Tell it to me slowly) Tell me why (I really want to know) It's the time... of the season... for lo-ving! |

I'm sitting here laughing to myself. I'm pretty liberal in my musical tastes, but 45 seconds is about all I can handle from Mr. Crewe and his crew of grinning musicians, but I'm letting it run thru. Kind of like a car wreck, you don't want to look, but you can't help yourself. Okay manny, "Music To Watch Girls By" isn't too bad. I've heard it so many times it's grown on me. What was that song from the movie "Kelly's Heros", with Clint Eastwood? Oh yeah, "Burning Bridges" by the Mike Curb Generation. I don't know what it is about that song but I really like it. I'm sure a lot of people probably like that Mike Crewe thing, but he was like Herb Alpert. Alpert had this really choppy way of playing that drove me nuts. Sure, he was good but I can't listen to his songs without that coming to mind. ("The Lonely Bull" being one really good exception.) |

| Guys like bob crewe and herb alpert had some great songs, but not every track,of course.Herb alpert did a great job when he sang this guys in love with you..his rendition of that great burt bacharach and hal david ballad.Didnt bob crewe write some songs for the beach boys in their early days?Speaking of great forgotten radio sigles..dave edmunds did a nice job on i hear you knockin..that great smiley lewis tune! |

| I was stationed in Monterey 69 to 72 and we would head up to winterland every weekend for the concerts. A band I saw called It's A Beautiful Day played "White Bird" and I loved it. I was listening to mostly FM at the time so it dosen't realy qualify for an AM thread but it did get some airplay. It had a long violin solo that was great. Another wonderful violin participant in a band was Papa John Creach who played with Jefferson Airplane. He also had a great album of old standards that I used to have. |

Dave Edmunds did some (alot) of really great work, both solo and with Rockpile w/ Nick Lowe. Some songs worth mentioning are Deborah, Crawling From The Wreckage, Trouble Boys and Girls Talk and that dosen't include the Rockpile music. He and Lowe put out a great ep somewhere around 1980 of four Everly Brothers songs. Sounded just as good as Phil & Don. Don socal, in Chicago we still get to hear I.A.B.D.'s "Hot Summer Day", which reminds you of White Bird, but is a really good song none the less. Somewhere in my collection I have a recording of "Filthy Funky" by Papa John Creach from around 1972, I think. Very cool song. I've been trying to find "Long John Silver" by J.A. that featured Papa John. |

| Thanks Jobird, The link wouldn't work for the song but the one on the site did. Didn't think to look till you posted and I notice you got the link from the same site. Would still like to find a link for Hot Summer Day. I will have to clean and rearange my office to find my LPs that are stuck back in the closet. I hope I and not the ex got the Papa John album so I can listen to it again. I remember heary Filthy Funky but don't know if I have it. There are a couple of used record stores close by so I may end up brousing and spending more than i can afford soon. I have read and listened to this thread and enjoyed it immensely. Looks like I will be hanging around here a bit. |

| Whitebird is a great song indeed. How about forgotten greats like 98.6..by keith,or joy..by apollo 100.Or perhaps early in the morning and hitchin a ride by vanty fair,or shes been gone by chilliwack, right down the line by gerry rafferty,or his old band stealers wheel and stuck in the middle with you.Chilliwack from canada, had several great singles.Bruce cockburn gave us the great..wonderin where the lions are..these are all steller songs we dont hear too much anymore!Morning girl by the neon philharmonic is a great one too. |

RE: 'Songs I'd like to hear once in a while'

I've always liked "98.6" and wanted to hear more by Keith. Same goes for Bob Lind. Being a folk music fan, I thought "Elusive Butterfly" fit and wondered what his other stuff sounded like. We talked earlier about Richie Furay. I read that he and Stephen Stills were in a folk group called the Au Go Go Singers. I'd definitely would like to hear that recording. Don socal was right when he said we were hitting on FM territory. I'd like to hear "Magnet and Steel" by Walter Egan, a fine guitar player who's still making music we don't get to hear. By the way Don, there is a new import available by Papa John Creach. A double disc: "Playing My Fiddle For You / Filthy". Includes "Filthy Funky" & "Milk Train". Keb Mo played on it in the early '70's. As a kid, the version of "Indian Reservation" we heard was by Don Fardon, a singer from England. Much better than the slightly cheesey sounding one by the Raiders. Speaking of... I'd like to hear "Arizona" and "Silverbird" by Mark Lindsay. Manny, I bet you remember "Shame Shame" by The Magic Lanterns from 1968. When you talk about the sixties and AM & early FM, you can't forget Johnny Rivers or John Kay. I've recently picked up relatively new recordings by each. "Last Train To Memphis" by Rivers is more of a blues-based recording and "Heretics & Privateers" by Kay is sort of a roots/country blues disc. I really dig both of them. If you're a fan of either, I'd recommend picking them up. |

| Had Real player but this is an old win 98 computer and some things don't work as well as I would like. I did download the real alternative and got white bird to play but some of the others still would not work. Back on topic after reading through again I don't recall seeing Roy Orbison mentioned. He had many songs that were played on AM radio. My high school girl friend said Mr. Lonely was our song. |

Spill the Wine, take that pearl was by The Animals' frontman Eric Burdon and the great band War. A cool trippy song from around the summer of love era. Bottle of Wine was a more Top 40 type sung by some gravelly voiced guy like that Boxtopps guy. I miss hearing: Secret Agent Man - Johnny Rivers Gloria - Them Bang A Gong(Get it On) - T Rex Midnight Hour - Young Rascals (also Groovin') Walk Don't Run - Ventures Time is Tight - Booker T & MG's |

"Bottle Of Wine" is a really good folk song. I have versions by both Judy Collins and Tom Paxton. I can't listen to the Fireballs' version. Around here we've got at least four oldies stations, so there's no lack of Roy Orbison. One of my Roy faves is "Workin' For The Man". One I never want to hear is "Oobie Doobie". What was he thinking? Bluefire mentioned the Rascals. Outside of "Good Lovin", I don't think they made a bad record. The Ventures made a fantastic amount of good music. I loved all their early stuff. Even when they were doing nothing but covers they were pretty good. A lot of their stuff is classic. I've mentioned "Sauvecito" by Malo before but they had another great release from their debut, "Nena". Lerue talks about Latin music, Malo is still going strong after over 30 years. Both songs should be played on classic rock stations. Manny, here's a couple of more for you: "Medicine Man" by the Buchanan Brothers, "You Keep Me Hangin' On" by Vanilla Fudge, "Go Back" by Crabby Appleton, "You Wouldn't Listen" by the Ides Of March and "You, I" by the Rugbys. |

| Pretty obscure stuff guys and good stuff,i have that old vanilla fudge lp,which i should switch to cd.Speaking of the fireballs.the lead singer was jimmy gilmer,a pretty unique vocalist who was also the lead singer on that great old single called suger shack.I forget offhand the name of that band, but i have the song on another compilation offering..boy i seem to own alot of compliations. The beau brummels had acouple great singles, one called.. just alittle,, is sort of forgotten.Gibert o sullivan had three pretty good singles that got am airplay here in the early seventies.Alan o day is that how you spell his name?It does not look right?,he gave us undercover angel. |
