What is your favorite song? And Why?

| For me, it's got to be "Within You, Without You" by The Beatles (of course). Man, I love Georges sitar playing! And the lyrics just sum up my beliefs. I can still listen to it over and over again and I wish that "With our love we could save the world". |

| Life would be so much simpler if I HAD a favorite song. If I could only have 5 to spend the rest of my life with, I guess today I would pick: Supper's Ready - Genesis And You and I - Yes Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull Legend of a Mind - Moody Blues Cinema Show/Aisle of Plenty - Genesis |

Truly amazing selection, drygulch. I thought about that favorite song question cropping up on the board (this and others) from time to time. I was going to answer with the notion that since I have three kids - and couldn't pick a favorite - I would pick three songs. But your five are absolutely wonderful. The only change I would make is with Genesis. Sure, 'Supper's Ready' is the best song of all time - what with it's historical AND future persepective, plus I love 'Cinema Show/Aisle Of Plenty' almost as well. But, I believe with five songs should come five different artists. Hence, keeping with the flow of your other four bands, I would suggest: NEKTAR - Remember The Future. Ric |

| My goodness, I am not familiar with NEKTAR. Guess I'll have to go take a listen on Amazon. What are they like? |

| Hmmm...how to describe Nektar...if you cross Pink Floyd with late Beatles and throw in a little Barclay James Harvest that wouldn't get you there, but you'd be approaching similar musical territory. The GEPR entry on Nektar can be found at the link posted. You'll need to page down a little to find it. |

| And who is Barclay James Harvest? |

| If you go to the GEPR site linked above, you can find the entry for this band. Sort of a gentle rock band from England, early to mid-'70s was their best period. They've been dissed in the past as a "Poor Man's Moody Blues", but they were really more than that (never as good as the moodies, in my mind, but very good at times in their own right). Well worth trying out, in my opinion. I guess if I had to describe their sound in a few words, it would be pastoral English rock with some limited orchestral/progressive/art rock tendencies. I understand that they made a pretty big splash in Germany, in particular, but just never were really well known in the states. I only have "Gone to Earth", which features one of the most beautiful album covers ever and some pretty darn good music. |

| My Girl - The Temptations Not a note out of place. Perfect instrumentation, strong vocals, timeless quality. It's a well-crafted song, strong from start to finish, with no silly funky break in the middle. The background singers know when to sing and when not to sing. |

That is a pretty accurate description of Barclay James Harvest. Personally I like their mid to late 70's material the best ("Eyes Of The Universe" is my favorite album to listen to over and over) but almost their whole career contains a gem or two on each album. "Everyone Is Everybody Else" has three tunes in a row that flow extrememly well - 'Poor Boys Blues', 'Mill Boys' and 'For No One'. Also, that album marks the beginning of their playful side of channeling other bands - specifically a Bee Gees type goof with 'Great 1974 Mining Disaster'. They would continue in this vein with other tunes such as 'Titles' from the "Time Honoured Ghosts" album where they strung titles of Beatles' songs together for the lyrics. I always appreciated the fact they managed to fit in 'One After 909'. Plus, I always got a kick out of 'Poor Man's Moody Blues' from the album you mentioned, "Gone To Earth". I agree that it is a beautiful cover, but BJH has quite a number of cool covers, not the least which is the original pressing of "Octoberon". That butterfly type guy in 3D is most interesting to look at and feel. Ric |
