Flippy Eyes/Aru,

Yeah, alot of the folks on the Garden Web are upset to the point of saying they're leaving the site because of the various ads. Fortunately, I have a DSL connection, (that my work supplies), so it's not quite as bad for me. But, they do tend to pop up just where I'm trying to read.

There is a solution:use Firefox instead of IE. During the install process it will ask you if you want to transfer you IE favorites list;if you do this, they will appear in the FF Bookmarks list. The last piece of solution is to add a FF extension called AdBlock (you will see it to the right on the page below listed under Resources and Links).

Let me know if you need help.

Here is a link that might be useful: Firefox

'K, Bob, I looked over the firefox thingie. It made a little more sense than your post, which, I'm afraid to say, was in a language I couldn't decipher. So far, my computer has been little more than a toy and a writing tool. Everything else is stuff I need to work on and learn when the time allows.
The banner ads I was talking about are the ones that run across the top of this page, not the pop-ups (which are annoying, but my pop-up blocker takes care of most of them). The top ads get big and small, big and small, and as soon as I click on a thread I'd like to read, it jumps down a few bars and the thread is no longer under my cursor (cursour??? Curses!)
Mike/Google(c)eyes, I am comfortable with gardenweb, it's like an old pair of work gloves that I just can't throw out.
Even if it lets a thorn in once in a while.

Those banner ads are a lot more than a thorn. They are intrusive and annoying. Their increasing frequency has definitely tempered my appearances.

Aruu, you might consider paid membership -- I have it and I don't get any ads, banners or links added to my posts.

Those ads sound like a big pain. When I go on Yahoo forums I encounter tons of big pop-ups and they are very annoying. I did see the firefox remedy recommended in other forum discussions of this problem.

Pay money in order to read/post on a forum? THAT'S INSANE!

RE: The Banner Ads

Well....if'n all of us paid, we wouldn't get the ads...the ads pay for the upkeep of the Gardenweb....Gardenweb is entertaining and informative.....
Where the heck was I going with this.
Oh, hell. I gotta go to work.
Bills to pay, y'know.

RE: The Banner Ads

Gosh, Ric, I forgot all about being insane. Oh, yeah, that's why they call me Mad Dog.

Actually I originally paid so that I could participate in certain members-only forums that I particularly like on GardenWeb & That Home Site. For me it's worth it, like subscribing to a favorite magazine. Not seeing the ads is just an added bonus.

(As I said, I also belong to some free Yahoo forums, but I rarely visit them 'cause they're not as easy to use and they have lots of ads.)

RE: The Banner Ads

I see your point, but I look at it this way:

1. I already pay to get on the web;
2. I share my nonsense on so many sites the cost would be prohibitive.
3. It is not the ads that bother me (I ignore them). But this site in particular has a very annoying way of getting in your face with floating ads.

Ric, I was wondering what you ment by point#2, how would using many sites cost more? It is one lump payment for joining, isn't it?

These banner ads are making me thirsty!

I see Ric's point, Aruu. If we all paid a subscription fee to each and every web site we visited and/or every discussion forum we participated in we'd all go back to using smoke signals.

But someone's gotta pay to keep this site running. How the owners choose to do so is their prerogative. But was it Einstein or Newton (?) that said "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."

Whatchu talkin' 'bout Willis? Lots of sites offer a sort of filter for subscribers. They don't kill all the ads, but cut down on the worse offenders. Consequently, if the sites you post on offer a subscriber rate, the costs could mount up in no time if one kept shelling out.

The ads seemed to have eased off...not jumping around so.
