Florence--books about it or set there

Florence is one of the great cities of the world--the birthplace of the Renaissance. I am at long last going there this fall. I like books with an atmosphere of place, which I think adds a special dimension to the book, fiction or non-fiction. But in traveling, reading adds so much to the experience.

So do you have any favorite books with a Florence connection? Any great books about the Medicis, the Renaissance, or Florence today? I'm having fun with a mystery series set there--lots of local color--by Magdalen Nabb. Then, "Brunelleschi's Dome" awaits.
