Social graces in literature

As I read some of the period novels I am fascinated by the obligations of "calling" on one's peers.
You left your calling card in a special dish in the foyer and the lady of the manor was then obligated to return your visit within a specified time?
How did that work?

It would seem that their time was strictly scheduled for these calls.
In some ways, it is a lovely way to stay connected.

When I look at the social mores of today I wonder what we've gained and lost.
Technology has certainly taken over our 'obligations' nicely with e-cards, e-vites, e-obits and e-condolences.
The vaguely annoying "save the date" alerts ahead of months-away weddings suggests that we are strangely overbooked?
If my calendar is so crammed with appointments that an invite 6 weeks before a wedding is too late to attend without a 6 month warning card..........do I really need one more social commitment !?!!

I know, I am now officially a creature of the past.
