Over the past half dozen or so years we've lost a lot of authors whose books I read - Dick Francis, Barbara Mertz, Tony Hillerman, and Robert Parker in the mystery genre; Kage Baker, Anne McCaffrey, and Frederick Pohl in SF. Others tease at the edges of my mind. No doubt they will come to me after I post this.

I just stumbled upon a mention of Mary Stewart, author of so many books which brought me pleasure years ago. She is still living at 97! I was delighted. And Ursula K. LeGuin, now 84, and still writing. I was pleased to encounter these survivors. We don't really know authors, but I for one have a feeling of almost affection for those who have brought me pleasure through books.
