Christmas Bookmark Exchange

| Now that the weather is turning nice (or cold, for those RPers in the Southern Hemisphere), it's time to think about...Christmas. Due to popular demand, this year all are invited to participate in a bookmark exchange. In order to do this, you will have to provide your mailing address - not here, of course. I will collect them via email and then provide the complete list to all participants. Yes, it is a bit early to think of these things, but I know how quickly time passes, and it is good to have the list finalized and ready to go by October at the latest, giving everyone time to get things together well before the holiday crush. And by thinking about it now, we will have time to gather or make whatever we choose to exchange. Any type of bookmark is fine. They can be homemade, plain and simple is fine. More elaborate and creative will of course be oohed and ahhed over. Or you can start collecting the free ones that are available at our favorite places, bookstores and libraries. If you are flush with cash, you can purchase them. Having done this before, I can tell you that is fun to receive bookmarks of all different types.
My email is silenceisgolden 4 @ hotmail dot com. There is plenty of time, you don't need to decide now. I will bring this thread up to the top occasionally as a reminder. |

| Woohoo! I'm definitely in on this, and thanks Siobhan for organising it. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Wonderful! Thank you so much for organizing this, Siobhan. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I really enjoyed participating last time and wish I could join in with you all this year. I am anticipating relocating to another area and I think the moving, etc. will take up pretty much all of my time. If things change, I'll be happy to participate. I still cherish all the bookmarks you folks sent! |

| I'm in! THANKS! I cannot wait to start bookmark hunting!!!! PAM |
my page email
| | |
| My "my page" email is no longer working so any emails sent to it will not be received. I'll have to figure out how to change it. I emailed Siobhan with my new one and am looking forward to the exchange. What a GREAT idea. PAM |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Sounds like a lot of fun, Siobhan. How does it work? How many bookmarks should we have ready for the big event? -- Kathy |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I must have missed the last one. I'd love to participate. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| It was fun last time and the local Post Office was surprised at the number of mainly extra US friends I was buying stamps for. I am not much into cutting, gluing and sticking (shades of kindergarten) but will try and look out for something local and interesting. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Count me in as well. If I understand this correctly, everyone sends everyone else a bookmark? |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Yes, that's right. It's a lot of fun when the bookmarks start arriving from all over. I started a thread about it, although it is very early. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Veer mentioned looking for something local. What a great idea. If we cannot find a local bookmark or if we are making them, should we include a local postcard? Can someone give me a bit of insight about last time? I missed it. Did you enclose Christmas cards? A note? Thanks, PAM |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Last time I put mine in a Christmas card, but it's not essential. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I believe I sent some postcards also. I was looking for bookmarks and the postcards were so terrific I had to get some. I will probably put mine in a card because I have loads sitting around here and honestely I don't send a whole lot anymore, so this will be a good excuse to put them to use. But nothing is essential, it's all just for fun. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| PAM - are you trying to tell me that a postcard isn't a bookmark in and of itself? What about tickets from sporting events? |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange - 2
| | |
| I'm in. I've done swaps of all kinds...the mail is so much more fun to receive during those times. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| YES veronicae! They are all awesome bookmarks! In fact, one of my favorite quotes is: "Why spend a dollar on a bookmark? Why not use the dollar AS a bookmark?" I use everything from photos to candy wrappers to airline tickets to empty or almost empty seed packets. I'm just trying to find out what folks did last year. PAM |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
This sounds like a fun adventure! Is it the kind of round robin when you send out one bookmark and recieve lots of them in return? Wooohoo!! I'm in. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Or do you send bookmarks to everyone on the list? If so, how many were there on the last go around? Just wondering how it would add up. Sounds like lots of fun. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
I wrote a long & detailed account of how this worked when we did the exchange before...however my message was blocked-no idea why-& it was not allowed...I know they have had problems recently but I did not say or do anything...but I did try to explain how the exchange worked in the past...I will see if this go through! Pat |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I've received a number of responses, thank you all! I'm sorry I haven't responded personally to everyone, but I want to acknowledge that the bookmark exchange is off to a great start. I am guessing that we will end up with 20 or so participants. Before the list is finalized this fall, I will be sure to contact everyone individually to make sure they still want to participate and their information is correct. So, this summer think about making/gathering/collecting 20 bookmarks of some sort. And feel free to sign up anytime with me at silence is golden 4 at hotmail dot com. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Siobhan, I emailed you to include me in the list. Let me know if you didn't get the email with my information. I still have all my bookmarks from the last time too and everytime I use one of them, I remember the fun I had making mine to send out and how much fun I had anticipating what I might receive in return. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| PAM - I should have added a smiley face for that posting...my current "bookmarks" are a post card, one of those photo holiday cards of a family baby, a ticket from a basket ball game and a drugstore receipt. No class at all, just what was handy at the time. But I do love using photos of special people and special times...nice to see their faces when I open a book! |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
Veronicae, you and I share a common definition in our bookmarks. One of my favorites during cold weather is a postcard of a lake where I love to sail. And family photos, especially the candid ones, are another favorite. But at the moment, (pausing to look in my book), it is a Burpee seed packet for "big mama" sauce tomatoes! PAM |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I am so sorry I can't join as I will retire soon and leave my computer at work and my present e-mail address. Will get a computer at home, of course. I collect bookmarks and my favourites are the Frank Lloyd Wright bookmarks from MoMa, gifts from American friends. I just checked them at the MoMa site and had no idea they were so expensive, 18 dollars! I also have a Charles Rennie Macintosh bookmark in the same style. They are too nice to lose in a book and actually not quite flat enough. I normally use whatever I find, very often nursery plant labels. I have given away bookmarks made from a felled elm in the Linnaeus Botanic Garden here in Uppsala, a tree Linnaeus may have planted. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| If you would like to participate strictly by snail mail, I am happy to accommodate - I can just mail you the final list in the fall. I have a couple of FLW bookmarks, also a gift. Lovely but impractical as they are thick metal with edges that would damage the pages of a book. I have sent a personal email to everyone who has responded so far (sorry it took me so long) so if you emailed me you should have a response. I hope I have not forgotten anyone, please let me know. And remember, sign up anytime - the fall is far, far away - |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| This may become an obsession beginning so early. I was at St Patrick's cathedral yesterday for the installation of the new bishop...stopped at the gift shop...immediately into my vision came the rack of bookmarks...the same thing at Barnes and Noble before the mass. It's as if I am already on the hunt! |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Veronicae - the same thing is happening to me!! Bookmarks everywhere... |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| My daughter-in-law was on holiday in Greece, and brought me home a beautiful bookmark. I really don't want to use it - afraid I will lose it! |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Veronica I know what you mean. I was at the Kensington Palace the year after Diana died & bought a beautiful leather bookmark there with brass trim & it is gone & I have no idea where. I used it, & maybe should have put it away, as I have no idea what happened to it. I love the leather bookmarks that they sell everywhere in England & have bought thenm wherever I am that sell them-Castles, Museums-Cathedrals-just love them. Pat |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I would like to participate again, although I'm mostly a lurker these days, and hardly ever post. Is that OK with everyone? |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
I'd like to do it again; I was in the last one and though I mostly lurk nowadays due to time constraints I still hope I'm a small part of the RP community :-) Sorry I didn't reply sooner but I've been in Vietnam for the last month (how's that for a throwaway line :-D) |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Siobhan, I have emailed my information to you and I am looking forward to all the fun! Rosefolly |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| OK, Colleenoz, I'll ask...what were you doing in Vietnam for a month? And did you get any bookmarks?? |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I was having a wonderful vacation with my DH :-) Our second (and I hope not last) trip to Vietnam... I did get one bookmark, as a gift for a friend :-) It is made of brass from a workshop that provides employment for handicapped people. A bit expensive for the Christmas Exchange though :-) Hmmmm....you've given me an idea ... |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Last time the bookmarks ranged from handmade (by the giver or purchased) to free give-aways from the giver's favorite bookstore. I still have many of the bookmarks. It was so much fun to open the envelopes and see what people had come up with. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Siobhan, do you have a feel for the count yet? We are going on vacation next month, and I thought I'd look for something different. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| So far I have fifteen names - my guess would be the final count will be around twenty. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Hope it's not too late--I just sent in my info. What a fun idea! |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| It's not too late at all - months to go! The more the merrier. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Siobhan, I don't think I sent you my address! Can you check, please? Many thanks, PAM |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Bringing this up to the top as it is getting to be time to think about this again. We'll firm things up and get the list finalized by the end of September. If anyone has changed their mind and doesn't want to participate, please let me know. And if anyone wants to join us, you are most welcome. My address is in the first post at the top. So far we have 19 or 20 participants. In the next couple of days I will send out a group email so everyone who is interested will know they are included. I will post here when I have done so. I've collected quite a few bookmarks over the summer, but I am still thinking of making some. Not that I am very creative, but it is fun. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Sounds like a lot of fun! I'm in, please! |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| May I join in also, if it's not too late? I mostly lurk, because 'dial-up' is so slow, but this sounds like so much fun!! Will anyone mind a lurker joining? Siobhan I will send you an e-mail...Thanks! Helen |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Hello all, I apologize for not sending out an email to everyone by now, but the weather has been beautiful and there are so many good books to read...I will get on it very soon, I promise! |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Lovely 'tradition' brought back to life - I still have mine from a couple of years ago and it's a great way to keep in touch offline. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Quick question: How many bookmarks do we need to procure? For example, if there are twenty people in this bookmark exchange, do I need to get 20 bookmarks? Sorry to be so uneducated about this - haven't done it before! Thanks |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
lemon, The way I understand it is thus: Each person sends a bookmark to each and every other person on the list. So yes, if there are twenty people on the list, you send one to every one else (19 bookmarks) and you get 19 booksmarks in the mail from all of the other participants. I never did this before but I am looking forward to it! PAM |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Yes, Pam is correct. And they don't have to be fancy at all - any type of bookmark or something that can be used as a bookmark, like a postcard. Free bookmarks that you can pick up at bookstores or libraries - anything. Of course you can be as fancy as you like, or as creative as you like. I would suggest making sure the bookmark fits into a standard envelope and is not too thick, making for extra postage. Strings or tassels are very nice, but if they are too thick, they cost more to send. I have collected quite a few over the summer, but now I am thinking of making some. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Siobhan, I think I asked you to count me in, some time ago, but can't remember. In any case, I'll e-mail you my real address, plus a more reliable e-mail than the one you get to if you just press my name on this site. I'd be quite happy for RPers to have that e-address if they want. Dido |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
Also there are a few of us over various ponds, and the postage is more for those too. This is so much fun, I can't wait! |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I'm really looking forward to this and I'm making some bookmarks, too. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Making a list - checking it twice - and three times - and four times - I have finally got myself together and sent an email to everyone who has signed up for the bookmark exchange. If you haven't received an email from me, my apologies, please email me again and I will correct my list. I have two different emails for a couple of people and I believe I sent to both addys. Any clarifications, questions, or concerns, please email me. At the end of the month, I will close the list and send everyone the snail mail addresses. If anyone is out there and wants to participate, let me know before 30 September. Yes, postage will be a factor - we have people from five countries! Several people will be sending mail exclusively internationally. I hope this isn't too onerous. But I am looking forward to these envelopes arriving in my mailbox! |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| siobhan, look out for an email from me. You are right, all my mail will be 'overseas', except for Dido's, which will be 'over-river' (the Wye is the border between England and Wales - Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire) and as the Royal Mail is always on strike/go-slow these days it would be quicker if I walked through those dragon-infested hills to deliver the envelope by hand. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| As far as overseas postage-I would certainly understand if anyone mailing chose the least expensive option in their own country-and the bookmarks didn't quite make it before Christmas. Actually, a lovely surprise in the mail in the middle of January would be great. January and February are usually such dreary months. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| veer - email me...maybe we can work something out for you to mail all the USA ones to me...and I can forward them with mine. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I am looking forward to the exchange. I would like to know if anyone prefers to get a postcard to use as a bookmark? It costs the same to send as an envelope with a bookmark, but I have some nice postcards I could send. And romance lovers: I have postcards with some classic romance book covers artwork by Franco Accornero on them, so let me know if you would like one of those (however, they are slightly larger than a trade paperback cover, so might prove inconvenient to use as bookmarks). |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Siobhan, You say 5 countries are involved - what are they? I know there's UK and USA and Australia and Iceland - what's the fifth? My postage is going to be the same as Vee's. I'd like to send stuff out really early to get the lowest cost and still get it to you all by Christmas.... end September coming up now so about mid-October or earlier might be a good time for us to send. Can we have home-addresses and all necessary info, then, by beginning of October? That will also save Vee from feeling she has to put her hiking boots on and trail across the dangerous divide - Offa's Dyke being the least of it. Netla, I, for one, shall be delighted to hear from you and to accept whatever you decide to send. Dido |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
Netla, as Dido say, I will be happy with whatever anyone sends, but as I am the sort of person who is interested in the whys and wherefores of everything it would be nice to get the 'feel' of the different places/areas we are from. After having been at RP for several years I find I feel I know some of you quite well, while others are more 'faceless' . .. which is fine as most of us have busy lives and several RP'ers are connected to other reading sites or want to preserve their privacy. At the end of the day it will be just great to hear the thud of the envelopes onto the doormat and family saying "Who do you know in Little Rock, Rehoboth Beach or Norridgewock Maine?" Dido, I think the days of surface mail are pretty well numbered and articles sent at the cheaper rate are usually parcels, which are then sent the 'long-way-round' in the hold of a Dakota. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I will also be happy with whatever anyone sends-scenic postcards are always interesting, bookmarks from libraries are fun, some of the free ones from independent shops have fun artwork and give me new addresses for future acquisitions, and hand-created ones are just plain fabulicious. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Netla - Since I often use photographs, post cards and greeting cards, a postcard would be splendid. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| The fifth country is Canada. I will be well pleased with whatever arrives and any size is good since I often use bookmarks in magazines and also for nonfiction books that often seem to be extra-large - probably to accomodate photograghs. The list is almost ready, and I promise to send it October First. Maybe a bit sooner. I don't anticipate more than one or two more people will want to participate. If the next week goes by without anyone joining, I will go ahead and send the list on the weekend of the 26th. I even have it ready, so there will be no waiting around for me to get my act together. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Siobhan, thanks again for organizing this. It will be so much fun to anticipate "presents" in the mail rather than just bills and advertisements! |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I got a new computer this summer, and the first thing I have noticed that I dislike about it is that it doesn't seem to have a "reply to all" button on my e-mail. That means I am not able to send all of you at once my real name on the messages I am getting from many of you. For the record, I am Carolyn Newlen; and I will put my name on the back of the bookmarks I send if that suits everyone. Mine are not representative of my home but rather of a recent vacation trip. Netla, anything you choose to send will be great to have. My thanks, also, to Siobhan for chairing this meeting. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I may have jumped the gun a bit, but I have just sent everyone an email with a preliminary list with everyone's mailing address, email address, and RP name (if I had it). I became a bit uneasy in my mind about possible errors, typos, inadvertant omissions, etc. and want to give everyone a chance to review their information. If there is anything amiss, please email me. I will send a final list next weekend. If you didn't get an email from me today, 22 September, please let me know. There is an attachment (the list) that is safe to open. One thing has occurred to me now that I have sent the list - if no country is listed, it is in the U.S. Politically incorrect of me, I apologize. There is still time to participate, so if anyone out there is reading this and wants to join us, please email me straight away - |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Excuse me if this information was provided, but when would the exchange take place? I would need some time to collect the bookmarks. Susan |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Hello Susan, this is for Christmas, so the time frame is December-ish. We have 21 people now, so you will need 21 bookmarks of some type. Please email me at ailence is golden 4 at hotmail dot com if you want to join us - you are most welcome. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I will have you know that this exchange has lead me to petty thievery. I was in a shop today, and some free bookmarks were on the counter, bookmarks advertising the new National Parks series on public tv. The clerk said, "Take one," and so I did. When he turned his back to take my purchase off the shelf, I slipped a handful into my handbag. Yes, my heist yielded enough for everyone. Is this stealing? (I already know the answer.) The bookmarks are impregnated with wildflower seeds and can be planted. These won't be the only offering from me as I have other plans, but I could not resist. At least there were still plenty left for other people! |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Ooo, I'm just in time then. I'll send you an email. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
Siobhan, I don't think that's a problem. If it's like our shop, we get heaps of things to give away and honestly like it when people take them. PS I hadn't thought of this before, but you are not allowed to send any plant matter to Australia. We have very strict quarantine laws, since being an island makes it easier to keep things out. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Yes, I was thinking of that - I shouldn't send those bookmarks across any ponds. Don't want to start an international incident! I think Canada is okay, but I will check. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Okay everyone - this is it - last day to sign up. Tomorrow I will send out the final list. We are up to 23 people. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| And this is it! Everyone should have a final list in their inbox. I hope all is correct and no one got left out! Please let me know about any inaccuracies. I think this will make all our holidays a bit more cheerful! |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| We have two new additions that I am sure will be most welcome - I have sent everyone a new list. If you didn't get an email from me, let me know. My fearless mailing list should be up to snuff but you know how it goes. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from the exchange. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| After puzzling what to send for the past couple of months, I've just found my bookmarks. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I have been collecting bookmarks on my travels and now have a grand selection --- my contribution will be diverse, if nothing else. :-) |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Sorry you have to withdraw, veronica, but I hope you don't mind if I send you some anyway. I have collected a few and made some also. I had to stop because the envelope will be too thick! |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| How far in advance should we plan to mail these out? Does anyone have any info on transit time from the US to Iceland or Australia? |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I know that you can mail Christmas cards as late as the middle of Dec to England and they'll still make it... Not sure for Australia or Iceland though. The USPS always makes it sound like a total crisis if you mail it later than it says, but I've done it loads of times and it's been ok. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I've found my bookmarks but now I'm looking for the right cards. Some cards are too short to hold a bookmark. I'll get started right around Thanksgiving, which is the 4th Thursday of November for those of you who live in countries other than the United States. So, late November. Rosefolly |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
Our Royal Mail 'personnel' have been striking on-and-off, but have decided to work so-called normally until after the New Year . . . will we notice the difference?. I wouldn't want to send stuff from here much past the first week in December. I hope to get a few interesting stamps through the good offices of DD who does the PR for Royal Mail 'special issue' stamps. |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| I'll plan to send out the international mail right after Thanksgiving then, and the rest by mid-December. Thanks for the timing guidance. Vee, I hope the Royal Mail (and for that matter, the USPS) holds up through the holidays! |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
I have sent books to Europe, South America and Australia and they have almost always gotten to the final destination within 10 days. Netla has never mooched from me on Bookmooch, so I don't know about Iceland ;-) |
RE: Christmas Bookmark Exchange
| | |
| Books to Iceland from the USA generally take about 2 weeks. Postcards have arrived in as little as 3 days. |
