A Current event caused me to remember this elegant short SF story of my youth. It was written in 1953 by Arthur C. Clarke: (16 December 1917 - 19 March 2008).

Wonderful, memorable, classic SF story. I was talking about it with a friend very recently. Dido

I had forgotten that story! Thanks for mentioning it, I found it online and re-read it yesterday. Timely, huh?

I remember reading that one too. I just didn't remember who wrote it. Thanks for reminding me!
|
I read it long ago. Imagining the end of the world seems to be engrained in the human mind. Rosefolly

Clarke's The Star is also wonderful - thank you for reminding me of this -

Apparently there is a collection of his works in one volume. The local library is getting it for me. I am a staunch Roman Catholic so you can well imagine my conflicting emotions when I read "The Star". I was attending a Catholic run high school at the time and a Jesuit priest and I had many arguments over it. Another memorable title is "The Cold Equations" by Tom Godwin. The theme of that short story has steadied me in times of grief.
