Popular Irish writer Maeve Binchy died yesterday.
I first came to her via a tatty paperback of short stories and wasn't expecting 'much of a read' but was surprised at what a good story she wrote with really believable characters. An understated sense of humour and warmth of personality shine through all her books.
Certainly not chick-lit as her work has sometimes been described.

I am sorry to see your post. This was the first I knew about her death and I thought "Oh, no" and guessed what was coming.
My daughter and I love and collect her books. When I visited Dublin, I particularly went to see some of the locations she wrote about. We will miss her.

I heard that she had died. I enjoyed her books, especially her earlier ones.

I,too, am a fan of her earlier works -- especially The Glass Lake. I tried to get my book group to read this but they shy away from anything that's more than 350 or 400 pages. I'm sorry to hear of her passing.

I'm not a fan of short stories or the characters-loosely-tied-together type of books she sometimes wrote, but I did enjoy many of her novels. I thought she caught teenage chit chat in Circle of Friends better than anyone I've ever read.
