Beryl Bainbridge died this morning. She was seventy five.

Short-listed five times for the Booker Prize (though she never actually won it).

I just picked up an item on BB on the lunchtime news where they asked why she never won the Booker. I have read a few of her books, but must say I never found them to be in the top prize-winning category, although I remember enjoying According to Queenie about Dr Johnson's good friend and supporter Mrs Thrale and her daughter.

What a shock! Just got back from an overnight in London so missed the lunchtime news.

I loved 'The Birthday Boys', about the Scott expedition to the Antarctic; also the one about the sinking of the Titanic (the title eludes me just now, I'm getting so old!) and The Bottle Factory Outing. SHe was wickedly funny and a champion smoker of cigarettes. I never met her but wish I had. Oh, they're dropping like flies this year..... It's awful.

Count me in as a fan of The Birthday Boys. I was surprised as I thought she was younger, and these days 75 is maybe not such a great age. She will be missed.
