Did anyone else watch the first episode of the Starz production of Outlander last night? I asked my husband if he wanted to go watch something else on our other TV which doesn't get the Starz network, but after he saw a couple of "those" scenes, he was glued to the movie.

I love my Hyundai Tucson...its amazing what I can fit into it...be sure the one you buy has seats that fold down flat including the front passenger seat, a rear window that opens separately from the tail gate, and a rubber tray to catch the dirt when you buy plants. I load plants into SUV's everyday and I can't believe some don't have these obvious features...the ones that really get me are the ones with beige carpeting!

I got annoyed with it after a while. The way she started the book with the husband telling his wife about the scotsman looking at her through a window made me think the author was going to cycle back to it, but by the time the third book came along and it was obvious she was going to make this a very long series, I got bored and never went back. And, yoyobon, I'm with you; I got tired of the burning loins etc. LOL

I tried the Outlander series because the time travel aspect intrigued me, but the brutality and continual peril put me off that series. I think I only made it through the first two. Same here. I didn't even make it through the first book. It seemed like she just totally forgot about her husband in her real time. I felt like I was reading two different books/authors. Rob, have you read any Nick Hornby? Juliet Naked was great. I totally loved Juliet Naked. Especially good if you are of a "certain age". The only romances that I've read in the last few years are Rules of Civility, and One Day. I believe I may have cried while reading both.

Outlander is set in the 1740's Scotland leading up to Culloden. The practice stays are stiffened with plastic zip ties, not terribly rigid, but the real stays will be stiffened with reed. It comes in a big roll and you cut it to size to fit in the stitched channels. Whalebone, reed, cane, and wood (often ash) were all used in the 18th century. You can buy a modern artificial whalebone made out of a sturdy plastic, but it is expensive. I thought the reed would do just as well. As for the bum-pad, I suppose they might have used horsehair, but there was a lot of wool around, and it is much softer and far less scratchy. I'll bet people used what was available and convenient. As for me, I used leftover wool quilt batting stacked in graduated layers, the way you might make shoulder pads for a tailored jacket. I plan to finish the second pocket today and move on to the petticoats sometime this weekend. I am feeling the pressure to make faster progress.

We saw it here last night Carolyn, and I was quite impressed. There was a lot of exposition in the first episode, but the acting was brilliant and the scenery wonderful. I thought the sex scenes were very well done too (obviously your DH agrees with me *g*)
I can see that Catriona and Sam have good 'chemistry' and am really looking forward to more.

I'll have to go watch the rest of it at my daughter's. We don't have the movie channels, either, but STARZ was doing a free promotional week that "just happened" to coincide with the opening episode.

I will have to wait until the DVD comes out. I don't have any TV except with an antenna. I need that to keep up on tornado alerts. Outlander is one of my favorite book series. I just finished reading the first one.............again!

I watched the first, free, episode and liked it a lot. We have enough invested in TV (cable, Netflix, etc.) at this point, so another $15 for Starz isn't in the stars. Like you, Emma, I hope to see it all someday.

Starz is in our package, but I am not good at remembering to watch particular scheduled times. My life is built more around books than television schedules. As I mentioned earlier I watched the first episode online and tonight I happened to catch episode 3, almost accidentally. Two will have to wait until it comes out on DVD, as I assume it eventually will.
