Real people romance. Any out there?

I am a long time reader of mysteries. I find myself wanting to read some romance, lately. I have been disappointed. I started a Deb MaComber and never finished, and did finish a Nora Roberts but that was classified as romantic suspense. The suspense part kept me going. I find I want to read about people who are NOT beautiful and young. NOT Ms. Gorgeous and Mr. Handsome. I don't need steamy sex scenes with firm perfect bodies. Where are the older characters? Where are the homely, or the fat, or the shy characters? I don't mind sex, but old or imperfect people do IT too, you know! Can anyone recommend books/authors telling stories about believable people?

They are billed as mysteries, but the Jeanne M. Dams books have a romance going on between an older couple. Try Hannah Fowler and The Believers by Janice Holt Giles. Now out of print, but you may find them at your library and certainly at on line sites.

Thank you Carolyn. I have read The Body In The Transept some years ago and I had been thinking of looking up Jeanne Dams again, after seeing that she has another series, too. I will check out the others you mentioned. Sigh...an hour of searching romance discussions online and I am not sure there is such a thing as I asked. At least not that falls under the genre heading of Romance. I suppose such stories are just shelved in General Fiction. When someone searches the Romance titles, they are looking for the hot and beautiful people, apparently. Ah, well....

The Letters - a new book by Luanne Rice and Joseph Monninger is a bit romantic. As I mentioned on the "what are you reading" thread, it is a correspondence between an estranged husband and wife. I was quite captivated. PAM

Well, it looks like those who dabble (see post- Did you ever try writing?)in writing might have a good topic for a book.

The Ladies of Covington are 4 ladies of a certain age who move together to Covington (you figured that part out, didn't you?) I think this series might have what you are looking for.

I recommend trying the discussion forums on All About Romance. I remember a thread about this subject a couple of years ago, and if you can't find it, you can always start a new one. I have linked to the home page. From there you can easily find the message boards. I also recommend the ATBF newsletter. I think there was one about the subject as well.
