Authors headed back to the patron system?

Saw this interesting piece on Salon.com about the possible future of authorship. Seems there are now websites set up where authors can solicit patronage for their work.

Here is a link that might be useful: Patrons piece

RE: Authors headed back to the patron system?

Stephen White, the author of one of my favorite series of books, has announced that he will be ending the series because of the uncertainty surrounding book publishing. He wants to control the ending of the series rather than having it happen in an unplanned way. There will be only two more books, one to be released soon and then the last one still to be written.

This announcement makes me so sad, not only because I love the series (Alan Gregory and his family and friends seem like friends to me) but also because of what it implies about the future of books and the worry that brings to the authors who give us so much pleasure.

frances - It's a sad situation and I'm not sure what the future holds for traditional publishing/books. While digital publishing has made it possible for anyone to publish a book -- virtually eliminating the big-publisher filter we've lived with for years -- it has also made it a bit trickier and more time consuming for readers to find quality writing. This is all in flux, and I'm sure we'll all adjust eventually.
