Looking for a illustrated children's book about flowers

Posted by grimm (My Page) on

Hi,

I`m looking for a particular illustrated children's book of poems. Each page shows a flower and is accompanied with a short poem about the flower. While I don't remember all of the lines, I remember one verse:

"Hollyhocks a stately lady/loves to grow where it's not shady"

I've Googled this line, but haven't been able to determine the author or title.

Can someone please help me solve this mystery? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Grimm

Grimm, this sounds like the Flower Fairy series by Cicely Mary Barker dating back to the 1920's.
Beautifully illustrated with accurate botanical drawings and a 'fairy' in each one.
I had a copy of Flower Fairies of the Trees as a child and although I wasn't very interested in the verses I loved the pictures.
There is a website dedicated to Barker's life and work, the one below is just of her illustrations.

Here is a link that might be useful: Flower Fairies

Grimm and veer - these fairies are available on fabric at quilt shops here in the US.

If you go to this website: quiltshops.com

and enter flower fairies in the search area, you can find them. I have seen the panels, and they are very pretty.
