My Boy Jack

Tomorrow, Sunday is Remembrance Day in the UK and Veterans Day in the US.

To commemorate this ITV is showing the play My Boy Jack by David Hare, from the poem by Rudyard Kipling about young John Kipling's short time in the trenches. He was killed on his first full day in action, and the play traces the pain felt by his parents at his loss and their efforts to find out what had actually happened to their son.

It was filmed in Ireland with Daniel Radcliffe playing Jack and Kim Cattrall his Mother (Carry Kipling was American) and their story must represent what was felt by millions of parents, wives, brother and sisters at that time.

No remains of John Kipling were ever found.

Maybe it will reach the USA before too long.

My Boy Jack

"Have you news of my boy Jack?"

Not this tide.

"When d'you think that he'll come back?"

Not with this wind blowing, and this tide.

"Has any one else had word of him?"

Not this tide.

For what is sunk will hardly swim,

Not with this wind blowing, and this tide.

"Oh, dear, what comfort can I find?"

None this tide,

Nor any tide,

Except he did not shame his kind -

Not even with that wind blowing, and that tide.

Then hold your head up all the more,

This tide,

And every tide;

Because he was the son you bore,

And gave to that wind blowing and that tide.
